Windy, dry conditions causing brush fires
SAUGUS, Mass. (WHDH) -- Dry and windy conditions are causing brush fires and crews spent Saturday in Saugus battling several.
Before firefighters arrived on scene, neighbors tried to combat the flames with their garden hoses trying to put out flames that were spreading through a marsh.
Firefighters said the wind eased up at just the right time and they were able to get the fire under control.
“We’ve always complained about this, but it’s supposedly conservation land of some sort so you can’t cut it, but it’s a fire hazard and it comes right to our fence and when the wind is blowing right and something like this happens, it can easily catch the house,” said a homeowner.
The fire spread from the marsh toward his house, singeing the edge of his pool.
“This stuff lights up, hot and heavy, but it goes out pretty quick once you get water to it, so pray for rain. We need rain,” said a firefighter.
Right now firefighters say they’re not sure what started the fire, but these are prime conditions for brush fires.
