Video: Deer stands its ground with 2 coyotes
GLOUCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) -- 7News spoke with the man who captured on video an encounter between two coyotes and a deer.
While walking his dogs one early morning last month, West Gloucester resident Shawn Henry came upon two coyotes -- alone at first -- but he later spotted them surrounding a frightened deer.
“I was actually sort of shocked at times how -- I don’t know, calm is not the right word -- how close they got to the deer without too much happening and how cautious they were of the deer,” Henry said.
Henry asked Gloucester blogger Joe Ciaramitaro to post the video on his website, and it became a hit. The video shows the drama unfolding for five minutes, though it was actually going on for at least five hours to play out.
“You got to root for Bambi,” Ciaramitaro said.
The deer at one point seemed to scare one of the coyotes.
“You would think two coyotes would have taken down the deer. But when you look at the video, you see that the deer kind of stood his ground the whole time. Patience pays off right? And standing ground,” said Ciaramitaro.
But the coyotes may have won; the drama continued after an Animal Control officer shooed the three animals deeper into the woods, away from homes.
“My assumption is that sometime later in the day it didn't end well for the deer,” said Shawn Henry.
The coyotes in the area may actually be coyote-wolf hybrids called “coywolves.”
