NEWTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- A babysitter in Newton was passed out in a car with a child in the back seat, according to police.

Newton police say they found the 48-year-old nanny unconscious, passed out behind the wheel Thursday afternoon with a 4-year-old child sitting in the backset.

Police knocked nearly a half-dozen times to wake up the driver, who at first just stared down the officer.

Court documents show the driver seemed "confused and lethargic.” She kept "nodding off and had to be awoken a few times."

The 4-year-old she was driving wasn't the only discovery police made. According to this police report, officers found two pill bottles filled with generic Ambian, Morphine Sulfate and Oxycodone.

The nanny told police "the pills were hers and she had taken them maybe six hours ago,” but it's not clear what drug she was referring to. Police said the Ambian prescription bottle was filled Thursday and had two pills missing.

The 48-year-old was arrested on suspicion of operating under the influence of drugs and child endangerment charges.

She faced a Newton judge Friday and is now free on bail.

7News also learned that her license has been suspended since 2005.

The 4-year-old child was not injured and is back with his mother.
