PEABODY, Mass. (WHDH) -- A man driving a Jeep crashed into a plow truck on the side of Interstate 95 early Tuesday morning, trapping him inside his car. 7News spoke with the driver of the plow truck who helped pull the man to safety moments before his Jeep exploded.

"All of a sudden it was like a big bang, a big noise, and it jolted the truck," said Howie Lane.

Howie Lane was in his plow truck in the breakdown lane while his coworker was removing snow at about 2 a.m. Tuesday morning when a Jeep barreled into the truck. The Jeep immediately caught on fire and the driver, who was unconscious, was trapped inside.

Lane ran to the vehicle, but the doors were locked, so he smashed the window out with a hammer. But the seat belt was stuck due to pressure from the airbag.

"I couldn't get him out, I couldn't get the seat belt off, so when it release, now we both just grabbed him because by then, the fire was all around him, his pants were on fire. We dragged him out, took him over, and laid him on the ground," Lane said.

The man from Danvers finally came to. He didn't remember anything, and thinks he dozed off just before the accident.

“I was so afraid he was going to burn to death. When that seatbelt released, it was like a load off your shoulders. I was just so relieved,” Lane said.

The victim broke both of his legs and remains in the hospital.
