PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) -- New Hampshire is moving forward with efforts to get downtown Portsmouth added to the National Register of Historic Places.

While the city already has a historic district, city Planning Director Rick Taintor told the Portsmouth Herald that the federal designation could help further protect it and allow developers to secure tax credits to renovate historic buildings.

Gov. Maggie Hassan and the Executive Council recently authorized the state Department of Cultural Resources to spend up to $175,000 in federal money to prepare the nomination to the register. Taintor says the state will hire architectural consultants to survey downtown buildings for historical significance.
