Father dies, son injured in snowmobile crash
MANCHESTER, N.H. (WHDH) -- A father died and his son was seriously injured in a snowmobile accident in Auburn, New Hampshire Saturday.
Aiden Ryan, 9, is being treated at a Manchester hospital and family members say he is doing well. But they’re also coping with the loss of Aidan’s father, 41-year-old Keith Ryan.
Family members say it was the first time Keith Ryan had taken his son snowmobiling. Aiden was sitting in front of his father on the snowmobile when they hit a bump and lost control, according to family members. The snowmobile crashed, killing Keith Ryan. Aiden suffered a broken leg.
“They struck a rock…and travelled 72 feet -- the machine travelled 72 feet through the air before actually hitting the ground and the individuals were ejected from the machine. The machine ended up in the brook over there,” said Chris McKee, New Hampshire Fish and Game. “They were both on the machine together. We have witnesses telling us that the little boy was on the front…and there was a male on the back.”
The boy is apparently telling his family members his father saved his life by throwing him off the snowmobile right before it crashed.
7News was told family members are in the process of making funeral arrangements for Keith Ryan, who lived in Manchester, New Hampshire and worked for NStar in Boston.
Keith Ryan is survived by two siblings.
