AUBURN, N.H. (WHDH) -- A man dead - and a child seriously injured - after two snowmobiles collided in New Hampshire.

Firefighters said the man and nine-year-old boy were riding a snowmobile - near a lake in Auburn - when they hit a rock.

They were both thrown more than 50 feet.

Investigators said there has been a rise in snowmobile accidents - after last week's storm.

"Every time we get a big storm we seem to have an accident or two. This is actually I believe the third one our department has received today, but it’s the only one we've had in the southern half of the state that I've been called to,” said Chris McKee of New Hampshire Fish and Game.

Officers said both the man and boy were wearing helmets - but those flew off during the crash.

The man was confirmed dead - but there was no word on the child's condition.
