LEXINGTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- A messy mix of winter weather starting falling just in time for the evening commute on Monday.

The snow began moving in around 2 p.m., but highway crews were prepared for the snow.

Crews began bracing for the snow first thing Monday morning. Massachusetts highway crews had equipment out before the snow arrived pre-treating the roads. Plows were loaded with salt and sand to be ready to hit the roads when the flakes started to fall.

Officials said the timing of the storm wasn’t good. Officials said it doesn’t take much for conditions to go downhill quickly.

“It’s always bad when it comes in the rush hour,” said Greg Murphy of the Mass. Highway Department. “Today they held over the day shift and they brought in the night shift early so they’ll have everybody in for the rush. But after that it’ll probably be a fairly easy storm the way they’re talking, except for maybe some icing. Rush hour is always the worst. Trucks get tied up, can’t do their routes and then that leads to all the problems that we have.”

State police are bracing for what they believe will be a few busy hours during the evening commute.
