WATERTOWN, Mass. (WHDH) -- A RMV worker was arrested Friday for promising driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants in exchange for $2,000.

Prosecutors set up a sting and in court they produced a picture they say shows Adriana Ferreira accepting cash for her promised services. Investigators arrested Ferreira when she showed up for work Friday.

Ferreira worked at the registry in Watertown, but prosecutors said she never came through on her promises and had the perfect out if the illegal immigrants complained.

"When the victims pressed for their money back, at times she called them crazy. She denied any knowledge of having any agreement with them. And she made threats. She made threats to report them to the Immigration and Custom Enforcement agent to have them deported because of their immigration status,” said prosecutor, Michele Granda.

Prosecutors said Ferreira also claimed she had a friend in immigration and could slow down deportation cases for a fee. They said she took thousands of dollars over the past three years from dozens of illegal immigrants.

Ferreira’s lawyer wondered why it would have taken them so long to shut her down.

“What that says about the quality of this evidence and the priority given to it by law enforcement officials,” said defense attorney, Craig Collins.

She pleaded not guilty in court Friday and is being held on $50,000 cash bail.
