Dog recovering after found near Westfield dumpster

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WHDH) -- A dog is being cared for after being abandoned. Animal Control officers found the dog, named Sherlock, starving near a dumpster in Westfield.

He is being treated at Vetcision in Westfield. Vets there say the dog is 40 to 50 pounds underweight and suffering from skin lesions.

“Not only was he malnourished in a sense that his body score is low, but he also is covered in multiple skin lesions. But definitely what we’re seeing right now is an animal that has a life-threatening illness. Our role in this is to provide medical care try to get him to the best stage he can be so that he can be adoptable and live a full long life and hopefully we will accomplish that with him,” said Dr. Megan Marquez, Vetcision.

Sherlock seems to be doing well, but vets say it could be a month or more before he can be put up for adoption.
