WAKEFIELD, Mass. (WHDH) -- Word is just starting to get out about a family in Wakefield collecting donations to take to the victims of Sandy -- and it all started with a 6-year-old boy.

A Wakefield boy turned his desire to help victims in New York and New Jersey into action, and now he's seeing big results.

After seeing the devastation from Superstorm Sandy, 6-year-old Jack Leary from Wakefield wanted to help.

"They need this stuff because they don't have any houses or have any stuff to live in," said Jack Leary.

Jack likes his Halloween candy, but he's giving a lot of it away. And ironically, that's part of how it all started.

"A conversation with my son coming home on Halloween discussing with the kids that the kids in New Jersey had their trick or treat cancelled because of the storm, and my son said, ‘you're not going to send all my candy,’” said Jacqueline Leary, Jack’s mother.

Add in the power of social networking, and within hours of making a Facebook page, donations started to pour in. One of Jacqueline Leary's friends donated the trailer and will deliver it next week.

"We can send them some stuff and it kind of just snowballed into all of us doing this and I got to tell you the community has been unbelievable," Jacqueline Leary said.

A message they do want to get across though: no more clothes. Victims need cleaning supplies, batteries, flashlights, gas cans, and work gloves.

Jack says it makes him feel good inside to be able to help.

"Because we're helping other people even though we don't know them and they're not our friends until they get all their stuff and have their houses," Jack said.

The truck is leaving Tuesday for the Bronx. There is already a volunteer group in place waiting to distribute the supplies to the neighborhoods most in need.

The trailer is expected to fill up soon, so if you want to help out it’s located at 5 Lake Street here in Wakefield.
