NATICK, Mass. (WHDH) -- Utility crews were working to clean up as quickly as possible, but Sandy left behind a path of destruction, leaving crews with a lot of clean up to deal with.

In Natick, a tree fell on top of power lines and buried a car on its way to the ground. Trees and power lines in streets, on cars, and homes were common sights all over New England on Tuesday morning.

On Travis Street, trees were knocked down along the road with one on top of a house.

“It's all the way through the roof into the bedroom, going down into the basement,” said one resident.

Across the street from that home, a tree crushed a car and took down power lines.

“We heard a loud crash and there was a big tree laying across the yard laying, across the neighbor's car,” said a neighbor.

An apartment building in Waltham was damaged when strong winds ripping off part of the roof. Everyone made it out safely.

Problems started before the worst of Sandy hit Massachusetts.

A pine tree in Wilmington brought down live wires on a truck trapping the driver inside the vehicle.

“I thought he was dead. 30 seconds he would have been. He was just sitting in his truck,” said Bob Yeno, a witness.

Crews rescued the man who sustained minor injuries. That single tree took down poles and knocked out power to 500. Across the state, thousands were still waiting for electricity to return as of Tuesday morning.

“We are not done. So we still have to judge the performance of the utilities but their plans have a level of rigor that is higher than in the past,” said Governor Deval Patrick on Monday.

Natick neighborhoods are riddled with splintered trees and some homes are hidden beneath the fallen branches and leaves as crews and residents start to examine the damage and clean-up.
