NEWTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- Newton Police Chief Matthew Cummings was fired Thursday after investigators presented evidence he made inappropriate and offensive remarks to his secretary and two female officers.

Cummings allegedly told a pregnant officer she looked as fat as him. Investigators also said the chief injured his secretary’s foot when he kicked off her shoe.

The hearing officer concluded the chief compromised his ability to lead his department and Newton’s mayor agreed.

“I examined the evidence, I examined his commitment to being a leader in that department. I examined his contract, did due diligence, looking at the investigative facts and saw that I needed to take action and I did swiftly,” said Newton Mayor Setti Warren.

There are indications the chief may seek arbitration. His lawyer reportedly accused the chief’s secretary of retaliation -- the 30-year city employee is in hot water herself, facing charges of stealing $600 from the department and destroying $1,400 in checks.

At a ceremony to honor Newton police officers, Mayor Warren said the chief’s firing won’t damage the department’s reputation.

“We’re going to move forward. It’s a great department, it’s a great city, it’s a safe city,” said Warren. “We’re proud of the men and women that serve.”

The chief had been with the department for more than 30 years.
