WINCHESTER, Mass. (WHDH) -- Massachusetts residents said goodbye to former Navy SEAL and Winchester native Glen Doherty on Wednesday.

Doherty was killed, along with U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and two others, when protesters stormed the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya one week ago.

During the eulogy, Doherty's brother offered a glimpse into Glen's courageous actions as the U.S. consulate came under fire.

"They fought their way in. There were 30 people working for diplomacy in a new country that wanted to live," said Greg Doherty. "He died protecting people because he believed in humanity."

Doherty grew up in Winchester. His family now lives in Woburn, where neighbors showed their support -- 450 American flags, which were donated by the city, lined the streets of the family's neighborhood.

“Everybody wanted to be here, welcome him home again. His family, someone in his family, drove by and said ‘Thank you so much for putting these out for us,’” said Renee Muse, who put flags out on the street.

The new owners of Doherty’s childhood home put black and purple bunting to honor his memory.

“I understand he grew up here. I just showed one of [Doherty’s] friends the house,” said Princess Devlin, who lives in Doherty’s childhood home.

A procession carried Doherty’s body from Costello Funeral Home to the church for 11 a.m. memorial service at Saint Eulalia’s church, after making a stop at Doherty’s childhood home.

People lined the streets as the procession passed through the town of Winchester.

“It hits home when you have family that are away. It just hits home when you see young kids lose their lives trying to protect us, especially on Sept. 11,” said Julie Riccardi, who works in Winchester.

Doherty was 42 years old when he died.
