Needham to hold 'Rally for Aly' viewing party Thursday

NEEDHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -- One of the biggest stories to come out of London so far is the American women's gymnastics team led by captain and Needham native Aly Raisman. In her hometown, everyone is rallying behind the golden girl.
One gold medal is great, but people in Needham are hoping Aly Raisman will bring home two. They’re planning a party at town hall while the gymnast competes again on Thursday. By the end of the day, they hope they'll have even more to celebrate.
“It's a point of excitement for the town. Everyone's talking about it. I got an email the other day that started with, ‘we may not agree about everything but we all agree about Aly,’” said Jerry Wasserman, chairman of board of selection in Needham.
Needham is opening up its town hall Thursday morning to anyone who wants to watch the live stream from London when Aly Raisman makes another run at gold -- this time, in the all around competition.
“I just think it's really amazing someone from our town made the Olympics and I just think all the stuff she can do is amazing,” said Molly Connelly.
The Olympic champion is already an inspiration to young gymnasts in Needham. Now they're hoping to see Aly take the spot on top for the second time this week.
“I want to do that when I’m older if I get to go to the Olympics,” said Megan Connelly, young gymnast.
The viewing party dubbed the “Rally for Aly” starts around 11 a.m. Thursday. The town says it will also plan a big celebration for the gold-medal girl when she comes home.
