As Aly Raisman earned her chance to go for the gold, she did it with a sparkling reminder of home. Her favorite Olympic accessory was handcrafted in Massachusetts and is turning into a good luck charm in London.

“These earrings are really pretty. They’re like rubies and sapphire and in the middle is a diamond,” said Aly.

Family friends, who own Adama’s in Newton, surprised the Needham athlete with the earrings.

“If you think about all the jewelry she can’t wear, we thought earrings might be the best way to give her something special that is wearable,” said Veronica Sagherian, co-owner of Adama’s Jewelers.

Aly was thrilled with the gift.

“I love the patriotism look,” said Aly.

She said she loves the earrings so much she has been wearing them non-stop.

When asked to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated with the rest of her team, Aly couldn’t resist showing off the new bling.

“I’ll definitely wear them any other time that I’m not competing,” said Aly. “If I’m allowed to wear them in the competition then I will.”

Aly was concerned she wouldn’t be allowed to keep the earrings on during competition, but she got the go ahead from her coaches and wore them as she qualified for the all-around final.

The jeweler promised if the women win gold in the team competition he will make identical pairs of earrings for the other four members of the squad.
