WAYLAND, Mass. (WHDH) -- Wayland residents celebrated a “snow day” in July, Friday.

The temperature was in the mid-80s, but the wardrobe included ear-muffs, snow boots and gloves.

“This is not a normal school day. This is what we decided in the middle of the summer to be to be a nice cool way to cool down on a hot day,” said Brian Jones, Summer Program Director.

“It is fun, and it is summer, and it’s really hot out. It is the opposite of where we are supposed to be really doing,”

More than 7,000 pounds of ice created a sledding area. The summer program is hosted by Wayland Public Schools with students from preschool through 7th grade.

“We have had a lot of sledding going on. We have our Polar Bear Big Foot Challenge there, the Hunt for Klondike Gold on the playground,” said Brian Jones.

The event is an annual tradition in Wayland.
