80-year-old Lincoln man rolls car off Route 2, onto I-95

LEXINGTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- Drivers who were headed toward the overpass said they saw someone driving erratically before the car skidded off the roadway, and rolled down onto Interstate 95. An 80-year-old driver was rescued from his crushed car. Firefighters were forced to pull him out through a back door. The Lincoln man was seriously injured when he sailed off the Route 2 overpass in Lexington at around one in the afternoon.
“We had one vehicle off the road that came from the overpass. And landed on its side here,” said Captain Mike Fulton of the Lexington Fire Department.
Firefighters said this was at least the second time a car has come crashing down from the Route 2 overpass toward I-95's southbound lanes. Police are still investigating why the driver came off the road but other drivers told emergency responders they could see the car was heading for trouble.
“There was some witnesses apparently who did see him driving erratically just prior to the accident. People were following him,” said Capt. Fulton.
Debris, including a shopping basket and beer bottles, was scattered near the crash site. Traffic on the southbound side of I-95 came to a standstill for nearly an hour while crews rescued the man from his wrecked car.
The driver who crashed was taken to the Lahey Clinic where he is expected to recover.
