NEWTON (WHDH) -- A Newton couple was forced to make a special delivery when their son was born at home.

With the help from a 911 dispatcher, baby Ripley certainly made an entrance Saturday. He didn't want to wait for the hospital. Instead, parents Nicole and Matt Johnson had an unexpected home birth.

“Her water broke all over the living room floor,” said Matt Johnson, father.

“I knew it was not time to get in the car, but time to start pushing,” said Nicole Johnson, mother.

Both mom and dad have medical backgrounds, but they knew they needed help -- so they called 911.

“My wife is in labor at home and her water just broke,” said Matt Johnson said to the 911 dispatcher.

On the other end of the phone was dispatcher Andrea Ferguson.

“I could hear her and I could hear him and he was just like, ‘Yeah, I can see the head,’” said Ferguson, 911 dispatcher.

“Andrea suggested Nicole start pushing so I was sort of like, ‘Are you sure the ambulance is on the way?’” Matt Johnson said.

Ferguson coached the couple through the delivery.

“I stayed on that phone even when the EMT’s and police got there ‘cause I wanted to hear that baby scream,” Ferguson said.

And scream, Ripley did.

Ferguson got to meet mom, dad, and of course, Ripley on Thursday.

Nicole and Matt Johnson say it was Ferguson’s calm and reassuring voice that made all the difference.

“I knew I was in more capable hands with my husband with the directions of Andrea,” Nicole Johnson said.

Nicole and Matt Johnson were not alone during the delivery. Nicole’s mother and the couple’s 18-month-old daughter were there.
