MEDFORD, Mass. (WHDH) -- Parts of Interstate 93 northbound were shut down during the rush hour commute Wednesday so MassDOT crews could repair a pothole that was giving drivers flat tires.

At least five cars had flat tires after driving over the pothole near Exit 31 in Medford.

“The second I hit it I knew it was flat. It was a big bang,” one woman said.

Even more cars had flat tires the night before.

“The mechanic that came said there were about 10 last night,” the woman said.

MassDOT says the change in temperatures allows water to seep into cracks in pavement, freeze, and expand.

Most people said they felt lucky that just their car was damaged; the scene could have been a lot worse.

“I thought I hit something. The car dropped…and then it started saying that my tire pressure was low,” one man said.

MassDOT says if anyone sees a pothole in need of repair, call them.
