BOSTON (WHDH) -- An electrical fire filled the cabin of an airplane parked at Logan International Airport Monday morning.

The brand new Japan Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner landed in Boston from Tokyo at about 10:15 a.m.

“It was a moderate fire condition in the avionics compartment that included the batteries and some of the electronic equipment. The fire, again, was quickly knocked down and confined to that area,” said Chief Robert Donahue of MassPort Fire and Rescue.

After all 184 people (173 passengers, 11 crew members) left the plane, a mechanic, who was doing a walkthrough of the plane, noticed a light smoke condition increasing from the underbelly of the plane.

Smoke billowed out of the side of the aircraft.

Donahue said the fire began in auxiliary battery pack that supplies the aircraft with power with the engines are off. Fire crews used infrared equipment to find the flames, which were then quickly brought under control and confined to a 4-by-4 foot area in the belly of the plane.

Something had caused the battery pack to overheat and ignite. The FAA will investigate the fire.

Officials said the fire could not have happened while the plane was in flight.

The aircraft was delivered to Japan Airlines in late December.

“Since April, since the 787 has been operating in and out of Boston, we’ve only had a few incidences where the aircraft has had mechanical issues. We were told that this is a pretty new aircraft in their fleet,” said Ed Freni, MassPort Director of Aviation.

No injuries were reported, but one firefighter suffered a skin irritation from the chemical used to fight the fire.

The outbound flight for the aircraft was canceled.

The fuel-efficient jet costs close to $200 million.
