BOSTON (WHDH) -- MBTA officials and passengers hoped for a smooth day Friday, especially after Thursday’s issues.

The extreme cold led to delays in service yesterday.

According to the Globe, 10 of the agency's 129 trains experienced mechanical problems when the temperature dropped to just seven degrees Thursday morning.

Nearly a quarter of commuter rail trains were delayed as well.

The cold also caused a rail to break at the central square station.

The broken rail disrupted service for nearly two hours.

MBTA general manager Beverly Scott said some problems were related to the old train system but even new equipment would have problems with such cold weather.

Thursday’s service was an improvement from an extremely cold day two years ago.

The temperature in Boston dropped to negative-two on January 24th, 2011, and more than 63 percent of commuter trains experienced delays that day.
