MassDOT: Sumner Tunnel to close overnight Sunday

UNDATED (WHDH) -- The following is a press release from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
MassDOT Announces Overnight Sumner Tunnel Closure
Sunday 9p.m. to Monday 5a.m. to allow for wall panel inspections
BOSTON (Friday, December 28, 2012) – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will conduct a complete closure of the Sumner Tunnel, weather permitting, on Sunday evening, Dec. 30, from 9p.m. until Monday morning, Dec. 31, at 5a.m.
The closure will allow MassDOT maintenance and inspection teams to test the stability of the Sumner’s 2,400 wall panels. The test is being performed following a full inspection of the Callahan Tunnel and the removal of approximately 120 wall panels. The two tunnels have similar wall panel systems.
In the event of inclement weather, the inspection effort may be postponed. MassDOT will use area news outlets and social media to alert the public to any change in schedule. If postponed, MassDOT will work quickly to reschedule the inspection.
The Sumner Tunnel was built in the 1930s and carries vehicles from East Boston/Logan Airport to Downtown Boston. Drivers are encouraged to use the I-90 Ted Williams Tunnel Westbound or the Tobin Bridge Inbound as alternate routes during the closure.
