MSPCA-Centerville Pet of the Week: Murphy the Parrot

Murphy is an 8-year-old Yellow-Naped Amazon parrot who is as friendly as he is talkative. He's been at the MSPCA-Angell Adoption Center for a few months now and staffers are hoping that his forever home is just around the corner. His small vocabulary grows by the day and already he knows "hello!" and "it's dark in here!" And he'll even say "step up!" when he wants to come out of his cage and step onto your arm. In fact, he's happiest when he can sit on someone's shoulder and preen their hair.

Amazon parrots are among the most talkative of parrots and their mimicking ability is matched only by the African Gray parrot. They are very social and require a great deal of attention from their human companions. Murphy has a good parrot friend at the adoption center named "Sinbad," and staffers home both can go home together. And because parrots can live up to 50 years it's imperative that adopters be prepared for a lifetime commitment, and have big bird care experience.
