BOSTON (WHDH) -- A cyclist was killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer truck near Boston University’s campus Thursday morning.

Twenty-three-year-old Boston University graduate student, Chris Weigl, is the second BU student killed while riding a bicycle in the area in the last month.

The accident happened at 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and St. Paul Street. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, but it appears the truck was attempting a wide right-hand turn when the victim was hit.

First, Weigl wasn’t in his multimedia class Thursday morning. Then, a fellow classmate reported seeing a horrible accident on the way in.

“She said, ‘I accidentally looked over and I saw what happened and it was terrible and I didn’t mean to see it -- I really didn’t want to see what happened. And she saw the bicyclist under the truck,” said Weigl’s professor, Peter Smith.

Minutes later, Professor Peter Smith told students the cyclist was their classmate.

“Everyone went into tears. Chris is one of the most loved students, one of the most brilliant grad students to come through here,” Smith said.

Weigl was a soft-spoken, talented photographer whom others admired.

“He was just a terrific person. He was so motivated and he really went out of his way to help anyone,” said Michael Cummo, a classmate.

Four weeks ago another BU student was killed when he was hit by an MBTA bus at Harvard Street and Brighton Street.

The area is full of cyclists, students and local works. Many of them agree bikers sometimes run a light, but when divers make a mistake it can have tragic consequences.

“There’s a risk cycling in Boston. It always has been...dangerous, but you know, Boston drivers are not terribly aggressive, but they’re unaware,” said Thomas Ballou, a cyclist.

This is the fifth deadly accident involving a bicyclist in Boston this year, all of them involving trucks, busses or a trolley.

Coincidentally, the city council scheduled a hearing on making streets safer for cyclists on Thursday.

“There are solutions to these problems, it’s not just something where you throw up your hands and say ‘We’re never going to solve this problem,’” said Shane Jordan, editor of Boston Biker Blog.

A BU group held a vigil for Thursday night for the victim in the accident and all other accidents involving cyclists recently.

The driver of the truck works for Ross Express, a deliver company. The company confirmed the driver was on his regular route when “This unfortunate situation happened.” Boston police are not saying if the driver of the tractor trailer will face charges.
