Police: Young suspect approaches boy with knife

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH) -- Police say a 6-year-old was approached by another boy who was showing off weapons at a playground on St. Peter's Field in Cambridge.
Police say the young suspect had a 12-inch knife and a gun.
Investigators say the suspect -- who is between the ages of 11 and 13 -- targeted a 6-year-old child. The suspect showed the weapons to the child.
“Makes me want to take more precaution if anything. But the time I’ve spent here -- which is three days a week every day after school -- I haven’t had a problem so that’s just more surprising than anything,” said Julianne Lyons, a babysitter.
Police say the 6-year-old was part of a group of children playing outside. Authorities say the children are students at The Cambridge Montessori School and part of the after-school program.
School authorities say a letter was sent home to parents.
“To just explain what had happened and that the staff on duty immediately removed the children from the situation and got them inside,” said Rachel Vandervoort, a parent.
Police say while the children were being brought back into the school, a teacher noticed the young suspect had a black handgun tucked into the back of his pants. The teacher also noticed the boy had a pair of silver handcuffs.
The school says the teacher believed the knife and gun were likely fake, but everyone is taking the situation seriously.
“The most important thing is to react very quickly, and that’s what the school did,” said Leysa Odimtsov, a parent.
Police have not been able to identify the young suspect.
