Boston (WHDH) -- An MBTA bus driver was honored for a job well done Wednesday. She’s received credit for helping to reunite a 2-year-old girl with her family.

Donna D'Amelio, a veteran MBTA bus driver, got a very big thank you, and the key to the city of Medford.

“You helped to protect the quality of life in our community and preserve what we hold sacred,” said Mayor Michael McGlynn, Medford.

Back in August, D'Amelio was driving her bus route when she spotted a 2-year -old girl wandering alone near a busy intersection in Medford. She immediately stopped.

“She was standing there alone. No shoes, and a blanket. And I looked around to see if anyone was with them and no one was there,” said D’Amelio.

D'Amelio is a grandmother and her family was by her side for the ceremony.

She says her instincts kicked in.

"I was just trying to talk to her. And just walk with her to see if she knew where she lived. So we walked a little bit and the police came," D’Amelio said.

D'Amelio was also honored by the MBTA and the Medford Police.

"Because of her efforts that child will live to see another day. We can all imagine what might've happened to that child whether it be an accident or a kidnapping. That child may not be home with its family today," said Chief Leo Sacco Jr., Medford Police Department.

D’Amelio chalks up her good deed to being in the right place at the right time.

“I’m happy I’m able to be there to help anyone that needs it especially the children,” said D’Amelio.

D'Amelio even bought a new stuffed animal and blanket for the girl. But since her family couldn't attend Wednesday, the police department will make sure she gets the gift.
