CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (WHDH) -- A landscaper was arrested Friday in connection to the dog poisonings in Charlestown.

Kenneth Hyland, 53, turned himself into police. He is charged in connection with the poisonings.

Neighbors in Charlestown said their dogs ate hot dogs soaked in anti-freeze.

“He should be punished. There’s something that should be done to him for doing that -- for having the intent to hurt a dog,” said Kim Ladue, a dog owner.

Neighbors said Hyland was angry that some pet owners were not picking up after their dogs and decided to retaliate.

“I understand there are some people who let their dogs poop on the lawn and not pick it up, and that’s a problem with the owners but not with the dogs,” said Ladue.

On Sunday, neighbors witnessed Hyland marinating the hot dogs then scattering the pieces on the lawn. They picked up the tainted pieces before any dogs could get sick. But six months ago, Ryan O’Connell’s dog, Terry, got a hold of a piece of a hot dog and became violently ill.

Dog owners were relieved to hear of Hyland’s arrest.

“You don’t want to have to worry about something that a dog might look at on the ground,” said Ladue.

The man faces felony charges.
