CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH) -- Dozens of Harvard undergrads are under investigation for cheating after school officials discovered they may have shared answers or plagiarized on a final exam for a spring course.

The university announced the investigation Thursday – the same day as students began moving into their dorms. They are looking into allegations of cheating by potentially 125 in an undergrad class.

The allegations surfaced last semester when a faculty member teaching the class found similarities between several take-home finals. There were roughly 250 students in the class and officials say nearly half the students were called in before the administrative board.

The students’ exams are being investigated to see if they cheating of other students or plagiarized.

Harvard students say they don’t believe the allegations.

“I don’t believe it. It’s a pretty good school full of pretty good students so I find it hard to believe. I’m pretty sure once enough research is done, something will come out that I don’t believe. I wouldn’t believe it,” said Francisco Hernandez, Harvard undergrad student.

Harvard officials aren't releasing the name of the class, the students' names or the exact number being investigated.

Michael D. Smith, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, released a statement Thursday saying, “We take academic integrity very seriously because it goes to the heart of our educational mission. Academic dishonesty cannot and will not be tolerated at Harvard.”

Students say they are taught how to cite their work to avoid allegations of plagiarism.

“All I know is that the university is really strict and its policies are really strict so in grad school at least we have to go through a lot to understand how not to plagiarize,” said Rupangi Sharma, Harvard graduate student.

Harvard says it’s continuing the investigation and any student found responsible for cheating will face disciplinary including being asked to leave to college for an entire year.
