BOSTON (WHDH) – Temperatures on Wednesday are expected to hit triple digits and beaches are ready for the influx of people who will be flocking to the coast in search of relief from the extreme heat.

Officials have issued a heat advisory and urge people to drink water throughout the day to avoid dehydration.

“Put a notification out to our elderly and to folks in the City of Boston to be very cautious over the next couple of days with extreme heat,” said Mayor Menino.

The Home Depot in Somerville saw an increase in customers Tuesday, looking to buy air conditioners.

“It’s already began. But the next couple days – we’ll see, probably tomorrow when the heat starts hitting people, they’ll feel it and they’ll be in here,” said Steven Haynes, Home Depot.

“I’m from an environment normally where it’s very dry. I can handle the dry heat. It’s the humidity that really is the hard part,” said Ryan Simmons.

With the mercury expected to soar well into the 90s, residents were reminded to be on the alert for things like heat stroke -- which means limiting outside activities and staying hydrated.

Most seemed to take the warnings in stride.

“Bring it on. It’s about time,” said Fred Lorenz. “I’ll take the heat over the cold any day. I never had to shovel sunshine.”

Summertime lifeguards were supposed to start working Saturday, but the Department of Conservation and Recreation said many of those lifeguards will start Wednesday due to the warm weather.
