NEWPORT, R.I. (NBC) -- A stolen sport utility vehicle was found abandoned on the rocky coastline next to Newport's famed Forty Steps.

Newport police said the SUV was reported stolen by its owner Thursday and was found Friday morning on jagged rocks close to the sea. Police said they believe the SUV was pushed, and not driven, to the location by someone trying to push it into the water.

The vehicle was removed and returned to its owner Friday. Police said it was significantly damaged.

The Forty Steps enjoys a prominent site along Newport's Cliff Walk. The stone stairs descend down a coastal cliff to offer dramatic views of the ocean near the city's famed mansions. Police said the site was undamaged by the vehicle.
