FALL RIVER, Mass. (WHDH) -- Heavy rains caused severe flooding in Fall River on Wednesday, leaving residents and business owners with water damage.

On Thursday the Red Cross handed out kits to flood victims containing brooms, mops, bleach and more to help residents clean their flooded basements and stores.

This is the third time Fall River has been flooded in the last month, but residents said this storm brought the worst onslaught.

Erosion below asphalt caused a giant sink hole in one road just as a truck was driving over. One home was reportedly struck by lightning.

City employees worked to clean the drains and the water eventually receded.

Some landlords noted the poor timing, as they were expecting tenants to move in this past weekend.

“…My first floor apartment there’s a four inch water line on my front door

…It destroyed my first floor carpeting and it’s just a mess…I had a tenant move in Saturday,” said Louis Bourassn.

Another landlord said his tenants now have to wait to move in to the apartment.

Residents said they are grateful for the American Red Cross clean-up kits, but said they could use more assistance.
