COLORADO SPRING, Col. (WHDH) -- The most destructive wildfire in Colorado history has killed 2 people. The Waldo Canyon Fire destroyed more than 300 homes including the home of a woman and her daughter from Lunenburg.

She and her daughter and pets were fine except they lost everything but the clothes on their backs.

“It was the perfect storm. They said in history we never had anything like this and 65 mile per hour winds, a wall of fire,” said Diane Paton.

The flames jumped the fire line over two canyons and right into Paton’s neighborhood.

“It incinerated my whole street.”

Her home has been reduced to rubble. It is a sight she first saw on the evening news.

“The only thing harder, in my entire life is when my father died suddenly and unexpectedly and so I equate it to the death of someone you love very much,” said Paton.

The hardest part is the items of sentimental value. When firefighters evacuated Paton and her daughter they told them to take a few days of clothes and that when fires were back under control they would be able to go back home.

“We didn't take anything sentimental or anything of value,” said Paton.

Her focus now is moving forward and finding strength in friends and family.

“I would not, in my wildest imagination, have predicted this kind of outpouring of support and love and caring," said Paton.

People have sent gift cards, phone cards and e-mails. Some have even offered to help sift through the ashes.

“To have to lose everything you have and done and collected, I guess that's a pretty good trade off to know I’m not alone and think there might be people out there without the kind of support and love and feel lucky about that,” said Paton.

A fund has been set up for the Paton’s to rebuild. So far donors have donated about $100.
