MSPCA-Nevins Farm Pet of the Week: George & Harriet
It’s hard to believe that two cute pigs could be found walking down a busy street in Lowell, Mass. But that’s just what happened in January when the local animal control officer spotted George and Harriet and brought them to a local veterinary hospital.
After a short stay at the veterinary hospital the piglets were transferred to the barn at the MSPCA-Nevins Farm, where staffers could better evaluate their health in an effort to ultimately find them a permanent loving home.
It was clear to the Nevins Farm team that the four-month-old piglets had not been properly cared for. Aside from the fact that they were found wandering in traffic, George and Harriet were both underweight. The team spayed Harriet in the Nevins Farm surgery suite and, because George was so attached to her, he was allowed to accompany her -- and he stayed by her side to comfort her throughout her recovery. Now, nearly two months later the piggies have adjusted to life on the farm -- but remain hopeful that a perfect adopter will take them home together. George and Harriet have learned to walk on a leash and are easy to care for, as pigs go!
The ideal home will be an outdoor environment with an appropriate shelter -- and owners who have experience keeping and training pigs. On Friday, March 1, George and Harriet will be the special guests at the National Pig Day Celebration held at Nevins Farm from 10:30a.m. to 11:30a.m. Staffers will read a short story about pigs for visiting children, followed by a visit to the barn to bring a fresh fruit salad for all of the pigs in the MSPCA’s care. The event is open to the public and visitors are encouraging to come and bring fruit for the Farm’s pig residents!
