LOS ANGELES (WHDH) -- Actor Ashton Kutcher is known for pulling pranks on people on his show "Punk'd."

But on Wednesday, he was the target of a very expensive and dangerous prank.

There was some movement in and out of the Hollywood homes of Ashton Kutcher. Much different than hours earlier when police swarmed the actor's home.

With air teams and swat units, the LAPD responded to a possible hostage situation and shots fired from inside the house.

“We get to the scene and apparently discover that it was a hoax. Around the same time, the assistant of the owner of the residents met police officers and advised us that all the people in the house were employees,” said Officer Cleon Joseph of the LA Police Department.

Initially treated as persons of interest, the employees were cleared into the investigation of the prank, also known as swapping, began. That's when emergency services are tricked into dispatching officers to a bogus crime in progress. Police are now trying to locate the person or persons who sent the teletype message. A method of communication used by the hearing impaired to alert them.

“Definitely a waste of resources, quite a few resources and I can't imagine that is going to make our tax payers happy,” said Officer Joseph.

While the numbers are not official, LAPD estimated the cost of the Kutcher event is between $10,000 and $15,000.

“We're somehow going to track down who this person was and eventually put them in custody,” said Officer Joseph.

In California, making a false call to 911 can lead to jail time and fines.

Ashton Kutcher was not home at the time of the incident.

He tweeted hours later that he was on the set of his show and that he was doing fine.
