'Vampire Diaries' Matt Davis cast in 'Cult' pilot: What does this mean for Alaric?
Okay, "Vampire Diaries" fans, you'll want to sit down for this one. This week, Matt Davis was cast as the lead role of Jeff in "Cult," a CW pilot from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Jeff is a blogger investigating the rabid fans of a cult horror TV show who seem to have taken the series a little bit too literally. When his brother goes missing, he teams up with production assistant Skye (Jessica Lucas) to get to the bottom of things.
So what does this mean for our beloved boozy history teacher (slash inappropriately attractive guardian), Alaric Saltzman?
He found himself at the wrong end of a gun at the end of the most recent episode -- but when this Thursday's episode begins, Alaric is alive and recovering in a jail cell.
While we can tell you that Alaric doesn't die in this week's episode, that definitely doesn't mean he's safe for the rest of the season. The character will get some surprising news this week that will force him to make some major life choices, and today's casting news suggests that Alaric might not stay in Mystic Falls for long.
Of course, since Davis will be staying in the Warner Bros./CW family, if "Cult" gets picked up, he would be available on occasion for return guest appearances on "TVD," especially because "Cult" is looking at a short-season format with only about 13 episodes per year. It would leave plenty of time available for Alaric to come back to town in the second part of the season -- that is, of course, if he doesn't get killed off.
(And don't assume that he does get killed off, either. Davis wasn't the only "Vampire Diaries" cast member whose name was in the running for pilot season this year.)
Conversely, if "Cult" doesn't get picked up to series, Mystic Falls High School may just keep his job open for him.
The casting was first reported by Deadline.
